José Saramago: Hope in the Alentejo
the village Azinhaga there is a small museum and a monument, because here is on 16 José Saramago Born November 1922. The high school he had to cancel because finance his parents, although Saramago's father was a policeman, this had become unmanageable. Yet it is the poverty that has set José Saramago's life a different direction. He is fitter.
with the novels "Hope in the Alentejo and " The Memorial " He gained his literary breakthrough. In "Hope in the Alentejo" unfolds for the first time the art of language that permeates his upcoming novels. Saramago was an atheist, blogger and member of Attac. the novel "The Gospel According to Jesus Christ" held the Catholic church for blasphemy, because this novel, the Portuguese government denied the author the European Culture Prize.
In "Hope in the Alentejo" Saramago tells the story of a day laborer family for four generations, beginning in 1900 until the Carnation Revolution. The rural population is characterized by unspeakable poverty. Among landowners make it compulsory labor from sunrise to sunset. Domingos Mau-Tempo, the first offspring of the family moves, with donkey. Carts, woman and child across the country. It rains terribly. One could easily imagine the whole of Portugal wine flowing, because Domingos, the shoemaker, will achieve nothing in his life, only he is a drunk who leaves a posterity of empty stomachs.
"... what should a man do otherwise if he has a wife and child - these faces with big eyes of hunger - the stretch her chin on the table and the scantily covered with moistened finger chase the crumbs, as if it ants. "
So strike. It will only be required, what is due to the workers, but the uprising of Guarda, the servants of the dictatorship is defeated.
"... they keep their rifles at the ready, without it they do not feel as human beings."
Following prison, torture, and some find death.
"The ants are surprised when this major Mass suddenly falls from the top down, but they are not taken, not even touched upon. In the time that they leave him to keep an ant stuck to his clothes, they want to see him up close, it is stupid, because they will die first. Exactly where it is just the first blow stick falls down, the second they feel already no longer ...."
"Every year at the same time home to call their sons. " Everyone knows war brings destruction, weapons of war are products of inhumanity. Saramago does say this not so directly, but were specifically aimed at the effect of the text from. Just as good literature is created. Saramago does speak a voice that always seems to be louder and more insistent, as if this voice will penetrate the full force of the skull of the reader who wants to nail down in the skull. My summary of the first few lines of this passage is very ridiculous when I think over the words Saramago. Finally, I am partial but over in Saramago's text because I can not not be. António Mau tempo to start the service on the weapon. "The homeland calls her sons." B Isher they had been worth nothing. At the door of the village hall is a note written on the name displayed. Since Antonio can not read, typed a "with the index finger on the line that curls like a black worm, you are, this worm your name that the writer has written the Rekrutierbezirks is ..."
José Saramago has written a novel about the suffering of Portugal, not only flowed the blood of the twentieth century, but this closes the blood has flowed the blood of hundreds of years before with one. It is no coincidence that the clan of Domingos Mau-pace of the fruit of a raped mother's womb from the fifteenth century comes.
for much of the novel, the reader might get the impression that his novel Saramago would prefer to call in the Alentejo hopeless, but the author believed in the possibility of a better world. Unique artistic language, authentic. José Saramago was a great connoisseur of the history of his country.

Yasunari Kawabata: The sleeping beauty
A look at the Japanese literature is worthwhile. First Tanizaki and it is this: Yasunari Kawabata: "The sleeping beauty" . Who's literary Reference to Gabriel Garcia Marquez ' "Memories of My Melancholy Whores" seeks will find something in the sleeping beauty . For Garcia Marquez love in a brothel, a 90 year old man sleeping in a fourteen-year-old girl. For the first time he's really in love, the girl does not touch, but hovers in the seventh heaven when he goes back on the road. In Kawabata "The sleeping beauty" old men go to a brothel where she lay sleeping beside young women (young, old, so between 16 and 20), in a deep sleep have been transferred, from which it at night, when old men to put them to bed and never wake up, they will never get to see who is beside them in bed. In the brothel, there is one rule: The girls must not be tainted.
We select five nights of the siebenundsechzigjährige Eguchi spends there. He enjoys the sight of the sleeping beauty, can absorb the scents of women. Yasunari Kawabata, it goes extremely well, to describe these girls sensual, but not distanzlos. Every Eguchi falls into their own Gedanken.Er thinks of women he has had, he thinks of his daughters and the woman he once had for a few nights. Life's Review, but also every night in the sleeper to increase the temptation to seduce the girl, is to deprive them of their innocence, where at much in this text stands out, what a ridiculous sight of it when old men next to young girls are and what would it be for a crime bebächtigen themselves defenseless girl. The view on the vulnerability of young women leads to dark fantasies in mental abyss. A book about the age, women, death and loneliness. It is through these deeper dimensions, Kawebatas novel stands out from Garcia Marquez's Melancholy Whores . Also convinced of the Japanese language. The Colombian wrote only a dreamy fairy tale.
Yasunari Kawabata (1899-1972) was awarded the 1968 Nobel Prize in Literature. His novella "snow country" (1937) was shortly after the publication already a classic.

Junichiro Tanizaki: Island of the Dolls
I have no problem, "Island of the Dolls" in the gallery great marriage novels have to make. This novel conveys timeless and will always be readable and hopefully stay with us in the West always present, although I am already graumelt to see these precious 150 pages to again in antique boxes. The novel is out the Japanese were translated into American, Curt Meyer-Klason gave us the German version. We did not know how the novel would seem to us in Japanese. The German translation, I think that's great. I use this language only as tender and full call of grace, so delicate, we cherry (or cherry blossoms are in respect to Japan, even a cliché?). Despite this linguistic grace of the novel is far versüßlicht. I can imagine the German translation could really teach about the atmosphere as the Japanese original.
The beginning of the novel already splendid. Kaname and Misako is unable to make decisions then how in matters of divorce.
"Careful her look evasive, and he looked at her. In fact, he looked just their clothes, trying to guess is an intention that ermochte ease him of his decision. "
Here we have the estrangement between Kaname and Misako, we screened but not only the clothing of a woman, but the erotic is, imagine that the viewer wants, which is under clothing. But this couple is the erotic verpflogen long ago, is a physical attraction no longer exists. Therefore, Tanizaki writes on the first page of a book so completely unerotisierend and forwards in this way the theme of the novel one. Precisely this behavior that small gestures such as in the quote, have their special charm.
Tanizaki theme in his novels, the contrast between tradition and modernity. The inefficiency in matters of divorce to make a decision is, in the very old tradition that embodies Misakos father. Concerns are obvious. How does the father react? The father might feel compelled because of the public opinion to deny his daughter when a divorce would be public. So the couple live together for appearances of pleasure and can not say that marriage actually lived out long ago is. Kanan is the one that is particularly the conflict between tradition and modernity. He wants to break tradition, but this does not finish. He has desöfteren attention to the Western lifestyle, where the divorce rate is very high (please note, the novel was created in 1929) and criticizes the Edoepoche, the time period of two and a half centuries before the Restoration of 1868, the period when the shoguns (military dictators ) ruled.
"The Edokultur was characterized by roughness of the merchant class, and where you looked, everywhere have responded to the haze of the market place ... the mere fact that he was a child of the commercial world, it had its shortcomings, their vulgarity and their overwhelming greed feel particularly clear. His response was his pursuit of the sublime and ethereal ... "
In females, he sought and in the art for the divine. Even though he was nowhere, climbed just because of his longing.
Kaname overcame a painful feeling of loneliness and poverty, when he thought of the emotional life of the Japanese, which just lacks the desire for worship.
Herrlich Kanan I find excuses and excuses, as the problem hinschiebt before him, his son by the project of separation . Tell Here the tragedy is combined with the comic.
The novel is absolutely worth reading, and we experience so some of the tradition of Japanese puppet theater (Bunraku).

John Boyne: The Boy in the Striped Pajamas
"The Boy in the Striped Pajamas" is a youth book. Because the father has been promoted to commander. It tells the story from the perspective of nine year old Bruno, who protested having to leave his friends in Berlin. The nine-year-old, presented very naive and ignorant believe in "Out-" be. From the window of the new house he can see into the distance. He looks over a barbed wire, and know many people are living behind the barbed wire, but it feels outside the barbed wire itself, until one day he walks down the barbed wire, and the boy, Shmuel, who lives on the other hand, countered. They talk and become friends.
This should be enough to get started. We proceed to the criticism:
I ask myself why someone writes a novel about Auschwitz, the unspeakable horror of the almost impossible and can not communicate in the beginning. It youth is a bad book, because a 12-year-old who knows nothing about concentration camps, the novel does not understand, a adult readers, the language to be simple. So: Who should read this? The view from the perspective of a boy is Imre Kertesz succeeded miles better because of "The Boy in the Striped Pajamas" "Fateless" the reader far more transported, as in the extermination camps was done, this novel is literarily sophisticated. Boynes novel, however, apart from the final, rather bland, too lax. A novel without effect. Total flattened and trivialized. Bruno says, because his father is the commander, it may be bad after the Stachelddraht not. As cynical as it has Jews in the ears when Bruno permanently from "Out-" speaks because he has not understood the correct names. His slightly older sister Gretel had to correct him easily. Wunderlich, many adults who like the novel. Our youth can offer more content easily on National Socialism. Young people will prefer to grab the robber Hotzenplotz or Harry Potter . How exciting was Enid Blyton's Famous Five . time seriously: read it but from the point of what to expect of young people of the horrors of the Nazis, "Julian's brother by Klaus Kordon.
Bruno says, because his father is the commander can it be bad behind the Stachelddraht not. This novel one can safely forget.
